Roland de Gostrie, ese era su verdadero nombre, era hijo de un capitan de barco irlandes y fue precisamente en el barco de su padre donde nacio. Inicialmente actor teatral, en 1915 ya en los Estados Unidos se convierte en ayudante de Thomas Ince. Desde 1916 dirige unos cuarenta filmes mudos. A la llegada del sonoro, realiza una pelicula para Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, antes de firmar un contrato con Columbia, donde permanecera hasta mediados de los 30. Despues de una breve etapa en Inglaterra, realiza para la Universal un conjunto de doce peliculas que ponen en escena al celebre detective Sherlock Holmes, interpretado por Basil Rathbone, con Nigel Bruce como su inseparable doctor Watson. En esta serie brillo especialmente, lo mismo que en sus contribuciones a los generos de terror y fantastico. 19 St. Clair, Malcolm
1897-1952Nacido en Los Angeles, llega a la direccion en 1919 procedente del ambito de la actuacion cinematografica, donde trabaja con Mack Sennett, tambien como creador de gags. En 1921 deja a Sennett y pasa a trabajar para la productora de Buster Keaton. Mas tarde, todavia en el periodo mudo, dirige comedias romanticas que hacen abrigar la esperanza de en contrar en el a un nuevo Lubitsch. Sin embargo, la llegada del sonoro esta a punto de acabar con su carrera, que se hace menos importante a medida que pasa el tiempo. Lo encontramos a finales de los 30 en Fox, dirigiendo peliculas de serie B en la unidad de produccion de Sol Wurtzel, donde permanece hasta la clausura de la unidad en 1948, ano que coincide con el de la retirada de St. Clair de las tareas de direccion. Entre 1943 y 1945 dirige cuatro peliculas con la pareja Laurel & Hardy, que son de lo mas flojo que hicieron.Montana Moon (Luz de Montana). 1930. 90 minutos. Blanco y Negro. MGM. 20 Sidney, George
1916-2002El reconocimiento critico a George Sidney es menor del que, en justicia, le corresponde. Empieza en Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, donde permanecera hasta 1955, dirigiendo cortos comicos de la serie Our Gang y de Pete Smith. Despues, es promovido a director de filmes de serie B, pero es su llegada a la unidad de produccion de Arthur Freed la que marcara su futuro como gran especialista del musical. La mayor parte de su filmografia esta impregnada, de un modo u otro, por este genero, aunque, en principio, la trama corresponda a un genero distante de el. Existe un ejemplo modelico: Los tres mosqueteros (The Three Musketeers, 1948), filme basado en la famosa novela de Alexandre Dumas, despide aroma de musical a lo largo de todo su metraje. Un detalle deberia darle la pista al no iniciado: la presencia, como protagonista, de Gene Kelly, que tambien trabajo con Sidney en Levando an clas (Anchors Aweigh, 1945). Lo dicho en relacion con Los tres mosqueteros es tambien aplicable a Scaramouche (1952). Deja Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer despues de dirigir a Esther Williams en La amada de Jupiter (Jupi- ter’s Darling, 1955) y se establece como productor independiente para Columbia. Mucho antes habia dirigido dos estupendos westerns. Si leemos su ficha artistica percibiremos de inmediato que lo dicho en relacion con la querencia de Sidney por el musical es aplicable a ellos.The Harvey Girls. 1946. 101 minutos. Technicolor. MGM.
